We did this in art class last week.
Flowers!
1. Mix your paint color you are using.
2. Using one of several techniques dab on paint in spots and let it spread on your paper.
Techniques:
Use a spray bottle and spray a circle shape. Make sure its a wide spray. Dab color onto your sprayed circle shape.
Wet your whole paper with a damp paper towel. Dab color in random places.
3. Finish the flowers you want. A odd number is better, and have a focal point, something in the division of thirds.
4. Add stems. Start at the bottom and with one stroke (don't wet your paper before hand) lead up to flowers. repeat for all flowers. add leaves and grass for desired effect.
5. If you want, take a unused toothbrush (and keep it for projects like this) and add speckles to your flowers or back ground. Also if you want add some defining lines to your flowers.
6. NOTE you can do this step first!
Add a back ground. Random swirls of a solid color all over the paper. or a fading background.
7. Have fun! let your colors run together, or not. Experiment with different techniquesWhat are some easy things to paint with watercolour?
Setting up a still life of transparent, coloured glass objects is a pretty easy thing to paint with watercolour. The intensity of the colour changes across the object and capturing that is not too difficult but can really help you to get a feel for the watercolours. You can find vases and bowls and glasses at thrift stores for only a couple of dollars and use them for your still life. You can start with very simple shapes (round or oval vases) and move up to more complex shapes (sculptures in glass).
Check out You Tube Virtual Village. The have free on-line videos on how to watercolor trees, skies and the rest. Also check your library for beginning watercolor books. If you love to draw you are 80% there. Drawing is so fundamental to a beautiful watercolor.
My watercolor teacher made her class today. We had done our first portrait and were all pretty anxious. Portrait painting from a photo was hard. She had instructed us to add ultramarine blue to the shadows of a blonde's hair and boldly show the shadows with intense flesh colors. I would have preferred to do sedate skies and trees. What did my teacher say?
';Paint boldly. Watercolor senses fear.';...
After laughing a lot, each of us sat down, whipped out our paintbrushes and starting painting with more confidence. No more tentative strokes and meek colors.
Without doubt, I have a talented and awesome teacher who takes the time not just to teach us techniques but to also get us to take some risks. Look around. You probably can find inexpensive teachers through your adult school, activity center or city center. You did not mention you age. A good teacher can increase you learning curve and also increase you confidence. Do not be the least fearful. You are in control of the brush. You can put a stroke of paint anywhere on your paper.Go for it!
