Is it possible to stain over paint?

have lattice that I maybe am going to wish to stain a brown, but I had already painted in an exterior green.

Will this be possible?

Thanks for your answers! Is it possible to stain over paint?
Yes you can. Use a solid color acrylic stain. The brands I like are Sherwin Williams Woodscapes and Cabot Pro VT. I don't recommend Behr. I used it on one project and was not impressed. Is it possible to stain over paint?
Since you are staining wood, the surface needs to be clean, dry and bare for the stain to sink into the wood and give you the desired effect. I don't think it will be possible to remove the paint from the lattice because of the nooks and crannies. Maybe its best to paint it another color or get some more lattice.
as stain needs to soak into the wood i would say no it would just wash off
Probably cheaper and easier to replace it with a wooden one!
I think you will find the stain will not adhere to the paint. If you sand the paint down first you should be OK, but you will have to sand it well.
No. It will not work.

Stain only works on bare wood.

Maybe you should try brown paint.
There is a special case of this called a glaze. But you will not get a ';stained wood look,'; you will get a ';glazed paint look.'; (see photo 2 in below link) You also need to use a glaze, not a big box wood stain. Some people use gel stains as a glaze medium.

You have a couple of options:

- Faux grain the piece (very difficult on a lattice)

- Strip, sand, and refinish (very difficult on a lattice)

- Buy new and start over

- Live with it

- Paint it brown.
Yes, but you will have to give it a few coats.
