How do I remove old, dark paint from very old hardwood floors?

I would like to give these floors a new walnut or dark stain. Is there a paint that I might use that would give the look of a stain? I quess I am trying to avoid sanding if I can, but if I must I will. How do I remove old, dark paint from very old hardwood floors?
the best thing to do would be to sand them. if they are very old like u say, sanding them will take off the ';dirt'; layer and show the woods true, beautiful colors. then stain and seal. they should look great. i no its alot of work, but it'll be worth it in the end and u wont have to do them again for many many many years. if u dont want to sand, try a paint remover, but that probably wont work to get into the crevases. How do I remove old, dark paint from very old hardwood floors?
Sanding will removed the old stain, but it will also remove the ';patina'; of the old wood, which is sort of a shame - that's where the charm of old wood is. But it is probably easiest.

Chemicals will remove the old stain as well, and if you use the right tools (steel wool, toothbrushes, etc.) you will be able to get into the crevices. However, it will take longer and smelll terrible.

Either will work - pros and cons with both.
There are chemical Strippers that will help remove paint, however, most that say they help remove wood stains typically are unable to completely remove the stain. sanding will be involved even if you use a stripper because when you stain the wood you will want it to be evenly open to the stain, and that requires sanding with 100-140 grit sand paper
Hi Patti, you must and you will (probably)

Bucknaki is right this is just to say hi, I get such a kick from some of your answers.
