IF you can still find it, fabric paint comes in a myriad of colors and tips. I wouldn't put anything on it like beads, etc., as it could come off a lot easier than it went on. Or how about Markers? Art stores carry several colors in ranges. You could also do iron on designs as well.

Batik is another option, but is very difficult for something that large. I did that in high school art class and it really smells, too. You could use large rings that clip onto the fabric and slide it over a curtain rod to hang or stitch a seam at the top for a rod to go through. Or stretch it over a large frame like canvas - would give it more stability as a room divider.Any good ideas of what to paint on my new curtain/room divider?
abstract lines of one solid color an earth tone to be elegant or some large leaves the leaves look japanese and just oriental you can also try some japanese or chinese writing like the shapes they use to write and identify with put a few on the hanging that would be a looker

Hope I helped and good luck
How about if you go to webshots.com and type Japanese scenery in the search you might come up with some ideas there that maybe you could abstractly paint on the cloths. Scenery would also give the illusion of giving your space more expanse.
